There can be few more pleasant ways to spend an afternoon in Hobart, than sitting on the deck of an award-winning winery and enjoying one of their signature labels.
Known for its cool climate varietals like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Riesling, Tasmania’s wine regions are unlike any other in the world.
Whether you are a bona fide oenophile, a fledgling sommelier or are just partial to a decent drop of white or red, there are plenty of wineries and vineyards in Hobart you can head to.

Criagow Vineyard
Located in Cambridge, Criagow Vineyard was one of the earliest vineyards to become established in the Coal River Valley.
Grown and curated to epitomise the characteristics of the area, which experiences very similar growing conditions to the cool-climate wine regions of France, this is a fabulous destination to come to for the quintessential winery experience.
Their cellar door, which was formerly a farm worker’s cottage, is a lovely setting in which to taste their current vintages.

Pooley Wines
If you are looking for an authentic Tasmanian winery experience, then head on over to Pooley Wines.
Blessed with a fabulous location, deep within the Coal Valley River, the setting of this vineyard and winery is just as magnificent as the labels they produce.
Adjacent to a traditional sandstone farmhouse, they lay on 30-minute tasting sessions every day of the week, that are paired with delicious woodfired pizza and cheese boards.
Some of their best labels include the likes of Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay. The latter of which is particularly divine.

Nandroya Wines
Over in Margate, Nandroya Wines is an accomplished winery that specialises in cool climate wines.
Perched above their river, which links North West Bay and Mount Wellington, their stoic vineyard enjoys a picturesque location.
Unlike other wine businesses in Australia, their vineyard solely manufactures Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc – which they do expertly.

Moorilla Estate Winery
Adopting classic European winemaking techniques, Moorilla Estate Winery is one of the newest wineries in Hobart.
It is actually built on one of the oldest vineyards in Tassie, which means it has a very contemporary feel to it.
Located in the suburb of Berriedale, about 12 km north to the north of the Hobart CBD, Moorilla produces three versions of wine. These include Praxis, Muse and Cloth.
If you like fruity flavoured, cool climate and small batch wines, you should enjoy a visit here.

Stefano Lubiana Wines
Renowned for producing some of Tasmania’s most holistic wines, Stefano Lubiana Wines enjoys a beautiful location nestled in the scenic foothills of the Derwent River estuary.
Run by Stefano, a fifth-generation wine-maker, he utilises low cropping techniques and minimal intervention to maintain practices that are, environmentally speaking, holistic.
Offering delicious wines, excellent food and delightful views, this Granton-based winery is well worth visiting.

Frogmore Creek
Set within picturesque rolling hillsides and oozing a rustic charm, it’s hard to believe Frogmore Creek is located in Cambridge, just a 20-minute drive from the Hobart CBD.
Currently, the largest of the ultra-premium, cool-climate wineries in Southern Tasmania, Frogmore produces four excellent labels.
This includes their Single Block Series, Winemakers Reserve, Frogmore Creek and 42 Degrees South, all of which differ in flavour but are consistent in the excellence of their overall quality.

Every Man and His Dog Vineyard
Operating as both a winery, vineyard, cellar door and bed and breakfast style accommodation, Every Man & His Dog is another wonderful destination to visit in the stunning Coal River Valley.
Close to Richmond, and just a 20-minute drive from Hobart, this is one of the few wineries in the state where the owner takes you on a tour of the vines, outbuildings and overall wine-making process.
They even offer a picnic hamper option which enables you to enjoy a delicious selection of wine and cheese amongst in a lovely vine setting.

Puddleduck Vineyard
As the name implies, Puddleduck Vineyard, rather quirkily, has a particular penchant for ducks, as well, of course, as wine.
Another Richmond-based winery, tucked away in the heart of the Coal River Valley, the venue is notable for the pond full of ducks that features within it.
It also offers a rather cool gift shop, which sells a number of duck-related products.
You’ll be pleased to know the premium wine here is produced from grapes grown at the vineyard and not ducks. Of their range, the Chardonnay 2019 is particularly good.

Glaetzer Dixon Family Winemakers
One of the most decorated wineries in Hobart is the Glaetzer Dixon Family Winemakers.
Originally from the Barossa Valley, these 6th-generation vintners decided to bring their skills and expertise to Tasmania.
It has proved to be a very good move as their Glebe-based winery has won a number of awards including ‘the best tasting experience in Southern Tasmania’, as determined by Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine.
Unlike other wineries on this list, this one has a rather unique setting – based within a transformed ice factory that lies on the fringes of the Hobart CBD.

Derwent Estate
Offering splendid views of the stunning Derwent River, the Derwent Estate is one of Hobart’s best-loved wineries.
Known for its exceptional, award-winning cool climate wines, their cellar door is based within a fabulous 1820s heritage-listed, limestone cottage.
They also offer delightful charcuterie platters every day of the week, as well as some ripping ciders, for those who are into that kind of brew.

Pressing Matters
If you love nothing more than a nice drop of Pinot Noir or Riesling, then make your way over to Pressing Matters in Tea Tree.
For more than 15 years this fabulous winery has been crafting its delicious range of wines, with an unwavering commitment to perfecting their flavour.
This is something they have clearly done well because up to now, they have won 42 trophies and more than 260 medals. Which is a real tip of the hat to the quality of their winemaking techniques and the richness of the Coal Valley soil.
Their cellar door is open for tastings by appointment from Thursdays to Sundays if you want to see what all the fuss is about.
